Salvador
Founded in 1534, Salvador was the first capital of Brazil and the main trading
port of Southern Hemisphere until the 18th century. Nowadays, it is the capital
of the State of Bahia, but it still presents countless baroque constructions,
remnants of bygone times. History, culture and arts were strongly influenced by
the African culture brought by the slaves. The African soul remains ever-present
everywhere: in the contagious rhythm of the music, the world famous “capoeira”,
the rich and savory cuisine, human warmth and also in the religion, where some
catholic features mingle with the African Candomblé. There are so many
churches in town, around 365 churches, that people use to say there is one church
for each day of the year. Most interesting contrasts make of Salvador a unique
place, the old city (port area/Cidade Baixa) at sea level and at the same time
the modern city on a higher plateau both connected by elevators (Elevador Lacerda).
The famous Mercado Modelo is also a must-visit site, colorful and picturesque,
in addition it offers handicrafts produced in the State. Salvador, baroque, modern
and lively city, the land of magnificent beaches. |
